Although segments of the education community have made progress on extracting and visualizing data from learning systems, the promise of “learning analytics” remains largely unfulfilled. Why? What are the blockers, technological or organizational, to a broader implementation of analytics? This session will examine some on the perspectives and preconceptions the industry has in their approach to the gathering and analysis of learning data, review some of the past and current work of the IMS Learning Data and Analytics Institutional Leadership Board around Caliper and other initiatives, and try to discern the road forward that could lead to easier, faster deployment of systems for the emission, ingestion and consumption of data that meet the needs of 21stcentury education.
