 Caliper in the Real World
Data-informed institutions are increasingly looking to event data as being a necessary component of an overall learning analytics strategy. To vendors who believe in institutions owning the data they produce, the IMS Global’s Caliper standard sounds great in theory, but how can they prove its real value to their own internal stakeholders? Come hear a panel session of early adopters from Instructure, Kaltura, and Examity, moderated by Unizin, talk about their experiences implementing the standard, championing it in their organizations, and the ecosystem conditions that make it desirable

Integrating Course Evaluations & Faculty Activity Data for Deeper Insights
Most institutions are collecting more data than ever for purposes of improving student and institutional outcomes; however, most struggle with collecting the right data and connecting it in order to harness the kinds of insights that will lead to meaningful improvement. During this session, we’ll hear from one institution who is breaking down traditional data silos and using data to both monitor quality and make timely, actionable decisions to improve teaching and learning. The University of Denver has taken an integrated approach by leveraging an integration between its course evaluation and faculty activity data sets, extending the life cycle of its data. This proves valuable in gaining a more holistic picture of course and program effectiveness, faculty workload, approaches to teaching and learning, and service across the institution for purposes of evaluation and continuous quality improvement. During this presentation, the institution will share its processes and how it has increased capabilities to use data across these processes in order to make evidenced-based decisions.

Using Caliper Analytics to Nudge Student Success
Through multiple learning analytics projects focused on student use of digital tools, UMBC is now able to predict with a high degree of confidence who will earn a C or higher final grade across a variety of course disciplines, even as early as week 4 of a 15-week term. We've now turned our attention to behavioral, empathetic nudges of potentially disengaged students to encourage them to take more responsibility for their own learning. This presentation will summarize our predictive analytics initiatives, including findings combining LMS, eTextbook and other digital tools. We will also share impact findings of our related nudges, and discuss how analytics can inform a scalable approach to institutional student success and course design. Analytics Dashboards are Awful: The Case for the unDashboard
The team from the University of Michigan will share their experience developing My Learning Analytics (a.k.a. The unDashboard). The development of this tool was heavily influenced by experiences and research into the efficacy of previous student-facing dashboards. The effort was brutal in its focus in providing students actionable insights; many prototypes were unabashedly dismembered in the process. This is the first application to leverage Caliper event streams in the Unizin Data Platform (UDP) – a consortium effort to build a multi-institution learning analytics infrastructure. The application provides a transparent view of a students' standing in the course, reveals behavioral patterns associated with good learning skills, and guides decisions about possible actions students can take that may improve their academic outcomes.

Easy makes a weak body and mind. I judge my success based on the success of those that depend on me. I am a humble guy with a slight edge of non-conformity I just can't seem to shake. I question everything.

Actionable Learning Analytics: Reaching Students Via Performance Insights
Join the presenters as they dissect an instantiation of actionable learning analytics across campus. They will share lessons learned throughout the development and implementation of a successful custom learning analytics tool for faculty to act on insights from the LMS data. Building a tool for faculty and students is only the beginning, the hardest part is to get them to adopt and keep communication channels open on what they need in the pursuit of successful teaching and learning experiences via informed insights. Attendees will learn about strategies used to engage faculty in the actual definition of the feature set and their guidance in the implementation of the tool to bring efficiencies in their efforts to ensure the success of their students in the course. An opportunity for attendees and presenters to discuss the type of standards needed to enable data-centric technologies will be provided.
